The lattice window Shubbak-I Âl-i Ömer and the surrounding el-Ḳaṣâʾidü’l-vitriyyât (vitriyye)

Shubbâk (lattice window) is the name given to the windows in different sections of the cage system surrounding the Hücre-i Saadet. Shubbâk-ı Âl-i Ömer is the historical name given to the section created during the time of Hz. Ömer b. Abdülazîz (Ömer II, 717-720) when the Prophet's Mosque was restructured. Hz. Ömer b. Abdülazîz carried out one of the most comprehensive major renovation works in the history of the Prophet's Mosque. In these works, carried out by the order of Caliph Velid b. Abdülmelik, the Hücre-i Saadet was integrated into the mosque by surrounding it with four walls. Shubbâk-ı Âl-i Ömer is a tangible remnant of this historical renovation. The expression "el-Kasâidü'l..." surrounding this lattice window refers to the written poems around the Hücre-i Saadet. These poems are a poetic expression of the love and longing for the Prophet; the verses left by some companions and later generations of poets enrich the layers of meaning of the place.
