The House of Hz. Zaynab bint Jahsh

Hz. Zaynab bint Jahsh b. Ri'ab al-Asadiyya (d. 20/641) is the daughter of the Prophet's aunt; her mother, Umayma bint Abdul Muttalib, is the Prophet's aunt. Hz. Zaynab was initially married to the Prophet's freed slave, Zayd b. Haritha. However, this marriage did not go well; when Zayd wanted a divorce, the Prophet tried to keep him. Eventually, Zayd divorced his wife. Following this, the 37th verse of Surah Al-Ahzab was revealed: "...When Zayd had no further interest in her, We married her to you so that there would be no difficulty for the believers in the case of their adopted sons' wives..." Hz. Zaynab was married to the Prophet through this verse; this event is referred to as "the marriage that Allah officiated in the heavens" and Hz. Zaynab is distinguished from other mothers of the believers by this characteristic. Hz. Zaynab is known for her asceticism and piety; she distributed the income she earned from her handicrafts to the poor. She continued these charitable activities even after the Prophet's death.
