The House of Bilal al-Habashi

Hz. Bilal b. Rabah al-Habashi (d. around 20/641) was the first muezzin of Islam and a freed slave from Abyssinia. After being purchased and freed by Hz. Abu Bakr, Hz. Prophet appointed him as a muezzin. Hz. Bilal lived in close proximity to Hz. Prophet in Medina. His house was located near the area of the Prophet's Mosque. After the death of Hz. Prophet, Hz. Bilal fell into deep sorrow and said he would never call the adhan again. He left Medina and went to Damascus. When he called the adhan once more at the insistence of Hz. Umar, all the people of Medina were moved to tears; for Bilal's voice reminded them of Hz. Prophet. Hz. Bilal passed away around 641 AD in Damascus.
