House of Hz. Omar

Hz. Omar b. al-Khattab (d. 23/644), a prominent companion of the Prophet and the second caliph of Islam, belonged to the Adawi clan of the Quraysh. Before embracing Islam, Hz. Omar was known for his harsh stance against Muslims. He converted in the 6th year of Prophethood; this transformation is one of the most striking events in Islamic history. After Hz. Omar's conversion, the companions were able to pray openly at the Kaaba for the first time. After the Hijra, Hz. Omar came to Medina and became one of the closest companions of the Prophet. He gave his daughter Hafsa in marriage to the Prophet. After the Prophet's death, he supported Hz. Abu Bakr's caliphate; he became caliph in the year 13 AH (634 CE) after the death of Hz. Abu Bakr. Hz. Omar's caliphate (13-23 AH / 634-644 CE) was a period of great conquests for the Islamic state: Syria, Egypt, Iraq, and Iran were conquered. Hz. Omar's house in Medina is an important place that witnessed this history. He was martyred in 23 AH (644 CE) by an assassin from the Magians.
