Zervan Well

The Zervan Well (بِئْرِ ذَرْوَانَ) or the Bi'r-i Erûmâ is a well located near the site of the famous incident of magic done to the Prophet Muhammad in Medina. The narration of the event is as follows: The enemies of the Prophet Muhammad had a Jew named Layman b. el-A'sam cast a spell on him. The materials for the magic were thrown to the bottom of the Zervan Well, wrapped in a donkey's tail or a comb. The Prophet was affected by this magic for a while; however, Allah revealed the Surahs of Al-Falaq and An-Nas to him. Angel Gabriel also showed him the location of the well. The magical materials were retrieved from the well; while the Prophet was reciting the Surahs of Al-Falaq and An-Nas, a knot was untied with each verse, and he was healed. This event has been discussed in Islamic history as the "magic of the Prophet"; scholars have particularly emphasized that the magic affected the human perception and behavior of the Prophet, not his prophetic mission.
