Zubair ibn al-Awwam Well - Bir'u Zubair

Zubair ibn al-Awwam (d. 36/656) belonged to the Asad ibn Abd al-Uzzah clan of the Quraysh tribe. His mother is Safiyyah bint Abd al-Muttalib, the Prophet's aunt. Due to the early death of his father, al-Awwam, Zubair was protected by his uncle, Zubair ibn Abd al-Muttalib. He embraced Islam at around the age of sixteen and is reported to be the fifth or eighth person to convert to Islam. When Zubair ibn al-Awwam first became a Muslim, he was pressured by his uncle and subjected to torture; however, he did not renounce his faith. The Prophet said about him: "Every prophet has an apostle; my apostle is Zubair." Zubair participated in all the major battles, including Badr, Uhud, and the Trench, and was one of only three horsemen who fought alongside the Prophet at Badr. At Uhud, he displayed great heroism by breaking through the ranks of the polytheists. Zubair owned significant properties in Medina. He invested the spoils of war and trade revenues into land and buildings in Medina. He had numerous wells and gardens around Medina. One of these wells, known as Bir'u Zubair, is marked on the map with his name. Zubair's properties near Medina indicate that he was one of the wealthiest landowners among the companions. Zubair's son, Abdullah ibn Zubair, was the first child born to the emigrants in Medina. Abdullah, who was born in the second year of the Hijra in the month of Dhul-Qi'dah (May 624 AD), was named by the Prophet himself. Zubair's other son, Urwah ibn Zubair, is one of the most important Tabi'i scholars in Islamic history. After the martyrdom of Uthman, Zubair moved to Basra with Aisha and withdrew from the battle before the start of the Battle of the Camel (36 AH/656 AD). However, on his way back, he was martyred by Ibn Jurmuz in Wadi al-Siba. The Prophet had previously said about Zubair: "He is among the people of Paradise."
