History

Banu Qurayza was the last of the three major Jewish tribes in Medina. It was part of the Medina Charter as an ally of the Aws tribe. During the Battle of the Trench (H. 5/M. 627), while the Quraysh and their allies besieged Medina, Banu Qurayza broke the treaty and formed a secret alliance with the enemy. After the battle, the besieged tribe surrendered after resisting for 25 days. **Verses 13-20 and 26-27 of Surah Al-Ahzab:** These verses are directly related to the Battle of the Trench and the Banu Qurayza process. Especially verses 26-27 clearly describe the fate of the tribe: "Allah brought down those who supported them from the People of the Book from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts. You killed some and took captive others." **Verse 13 of Surah Al-Ma'idah:** This verse addresses the issue of the Jews breaking their covenant and includes the betrayal of Banu Qurayza at the Trench. **Verse 79 of Surah Al-Baqarah:** It contains a stern warning against the Jews who distort the Book, and it is stated that this verse refers to the Jews of Medina, such as Banu Qurayza. **Verse 27 of Surah Al-Anfal:** "O you who have believed! Do not betray Allah and His Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence]." Some interpretations indicate that this verse was revealed in relation to the treaty violation of Banu Qurayza.
