Verses 9 and 11 of Surah Al-Jumu'ah

Surah Al-Jumu'ah was likely revealed during the Medina period, possibly in the first year of Hijrah. The last three verses (9-11) of this 11-verse surah contain fundamental rulings regarding the obligation of Friday prayer, the social importance of this worship, and the balance between this world and the hereafter. There are significant narrations regarding the reason for the revelation of verse 11. According to narrations from Jabir b. Abdullah and other companions, while the Prophet was delivering a sermon on a Friday, a trade caravan entered Medina from Damascus. The drums and horns accompanying the caravan announced its arrival in Arab tradition; these sounds attracted people's attention. The majority of the congregation in the mosque suddenly got up and rushed to the caravan. It is reported that only twelve men and one woman remained in the mosque, while the rest dispersed. The Prophet had to continue his sermon standing. Consequently, verse 11 was revealed: "When they saw a trade or a diversion, they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, 'What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a trade, and Allah is the best of providers.'" Verse 9 contains the fundamental ruling specific to Friday prayer: "O you who have believed, when the call to prayer is announced on the day of Jumu'ah, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew." This verse establishes the Qur'anic regulation that declares the obligation of Friday prayer and commands that commercial activities must cease when the prayer time begins. The mentioned place is the area where this historical event took place around the Prophet's Mosque. At that time, caravans entering Medina would head towards the market area near the mosque; therefore, the sounds of the caravan reached the mosque and influenced the congregation.
