Umm Salama

Umm Salama Hind bint Ebi Umeyye el-Mahzumiyye (d. 62/681) was the longest-living among the wives of the Prophet Muhammad; she passed away at the age of 84. She migrated to both Abyssinia and Medina with her first husband, Abu Salama el-Mahzumi. After her husband's death in the 4th year of Hijra, her waiting period ended, and the Prophet Muhammad proposed marriage to her. Umm Salama initially hesitated, saying, "I am an old woman with jealousy; moreover, I have small children." However, with the Prophet's insistence and persuasion, this blessed union took place. Umm Salama was one of the most trusted wives of the Prophet Muhammad. After the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when the companions were disappointed and reluctant to sacrifice, she gave the Prophet a critical piece of advice: "You go out, sacrifice your animal, and shave your head." This strategy worked; the companions then did the same. Umm Salama is also known for the narration that the 67th verse of Surah Al-Ma'idah was revealed while the Prophet was in her room.
