The Trade of Hz. Ja'far's Son

Hz. Ja'far b. Abi Talib was the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad and the elder brother of Hz. Ali. He was a pioneer of the migration to Abyssinia and one of the heroic commanders of the Battle of Mu'tah. In the Battle of Mu'tah, which took place in the 8th year of Hijra (629), Ja'far was martyred alongside Zayd b. Harithah and Abdullah b. Rawahah. Despite having both arms cut off during the battle, he did not drop the flag. Upon hearing this news, the Prophet was deeply saddened; he personally visited Ja'far's family. Ja'far's young children were left orphaned when their father was martyred. The Prophet did not only provide emotional support to the orphaned companions' children; he also took various measures to ensure their economic stability. According to narrations, the Prophet provided opportunities for Ja'far's son or the Ja'far family to engage in trade or encouraged and supported them in this regard. This practice illustrates how martyr families were protected within the Islamic community and how social solidarity was approached with an institutional understanding at that time. The Prophet's attitude reflects a concrete manifestation of the understanding of "the father of the orphans" in Islam. The Messenger of Allah said about Hz. Ja'far: "Ja'far! Allah is making you fly in Paradise with two wings." For this reason, Hz. Ja'far was given the nickname "Tayyâr" (the flying one) or "Zul-Janahayn" (the one with two wings).
