The Mihrab of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

The Prophet ﷺ led prayers in the Prophet's Mosque as an imam for about ten years from its construction until his death. Initially, the mosque did not have a mihrab; the Prophet ﷺ would lead prayers facing the direction of a stick or spear that was planted. After the qibla was changed from Jerusalem to the Kaaba (2 AH/624 CE), the southern wall was turned into the qibla wall. The niche-shaped mihrab was added to the mosque during the major expansion (88-91 AH / 706-709 CE) ordered by Walid ibn Abd al-Malik during the governorship of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, who later became caliph. This is one of the first niche mihrab implementations in Islamic history. The mihrab of the Prophet ﷺ is located within the Rawdat al-Mutahhara, at the closest point to the Hujra al-Saadah. Every Muslim who comes to the mosque considers it a great honor to pray or at least to make a supplication in front of this mihrab.
