The Memory of Sa'd b. Rabi and Abdurrahman b. Awf

One of the most important social arrangements made by the Prophet after his migration to Medina was to establish brotherhood (mu'ahat) between the Ansar and the Emigrants. This brotherhood was not just an emotional bond; it created real legal obligations in matters of property, inheritance, and social assistance. The brotherhood of Sa'd b. Rabi and Abdurrahman b. Awf is one of the most striking examples of this mu'ahat. Sa'd b. Rabi, one of the richest of the Ansar, said to his new brother Abdurrahman b. Awf with deep sincerity and generosity: "My brother! I am one of the wealthiest in Medina. Let us share half of my wealth. I have two wives; whichever you prefer, I will divorce her, and after her waiting period, she can marry you." In response to this offer, Abdurrahman b. Awf replied with great respect and dignity: "May Allah increase the blessings of your wealth and family. Just show me the market of Medina, that is enough." Sa'd showed him the market. Abdurrahman began to trade and soon acquired great wealth. This event showcases three fundamental dimensions of Islamic brotherhood: the sacrifice and generosity of the Ansar, the importance the Emigrants placed on dignity and hard work, and the unique success of the Prophet in ensuring social integration through an institutional brotherhood system. Sa'd b. Rabi later became a martyr in the Battle of Uhud (3 AH/625 CE). Even while lying on the ground with sword wounds before he died, he said, "Convey my greetings to your Prophet.
