The Memorial of Sabit b. Kays

Sabit b. Kays b. Shammās al-Hazrajī was one of the Ansar companions known for his loud voice and passionate speeches. The second verse of Surah Al-Hujurat was revealed: "O you who have believed! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet." When this verse was revealed, Sabit b. Kays became very anxious: "I always speak loudly; it means my deeds have gone to waste." He began to shut himself in at home and stopped going out. The Prophet inquired about him; when he became aware of the matter, he sent glad tidings to Sabit: "Go and tell him; he is among the people of Paradise." Sabit felt relieved with this good news. Surah Al-Hujurat also narrates an incident related to a delegation from the Tamim tribe: The delegation shouted in front of the Prophet's rooms, "O Muhammad! Come out!"
