The Hendek Martyrdom (Sa'd b. Muâz, Enes b. Evs, Abdullah b. Sehl, Tufeyl b. Nu‘mân, Sa‘lebe b. Ganeme, and Kâ‘b b. Zeyd)

The Battle of Hendek is one of the most critical battles in Islamic history. In this battle, which took place between an army of approximately 10,000-12,000 polytheists and about 3,000 Muslims, the Islamic army only lost six martyrs; this shows how effective the trench tactic was. The martyrs of Hendek and their short life stories are as follows: 1. Sa'd b. Muâz (d. 5 H. / 627 M.): He was the chief of the Aws tribe and one of the most important figures of the Battle of Hendek. He was wounded by an arrow during the battle, and his arm vein was cut. He participated in the Banu Qurayza trial before he could heal; after giving his judgment, he was martyred when his wound reopened. The Prophet Muhammad said about him, "The Throne of the Most Merciful trembled for Sa'd b. Muâz." He was buried in Jannat al-Baqi. 2. Enes b. Evs b. Atîk b. Amr: He is from the Abdüleşhel branch of the Aws tribe. He is the second name to be martyred during the Battle of Hendek. 3. Abdullah b. Sehl: This companion, mentioned among the martyrs of the Battle of Hendek, also belongs to the Abdüleşhel branch of the Aws tribe. 4. Tufeyl b. Nu'mân: This companion, who is from the Cesim branch of the Khazraj tribe, is one of the martyrs of the Battle of Hendek. 5. Sa'lebe b. Ganeme: He is also from the Cesim branch of the Khazraj tribe and was martyred in the Battle of Hendek. 6. Kâ'b b. Zeyd: He is the sixth name to be martyred in the Battle of Hendek. The vast majority of these martyrs are buried in the cemetery below the Fetih Mosque. Only Sa'd b. Muâz was buried separately in Jannat al-Baqi because he was martyred after the judgment of Banu Qurayza.
