MapHistory
The martyrs of the Uhud Battle (3 AH / 625 CE) were buried in this area on the battlefield of Uhud without being washed or having a funeral prayer performed, as per the command of the Prophet Muhammad. The reason for this was the Prophet's announcement that the martyrs would be resurrected on the Day of Judgment in this state. Jabir b. Abdullah narrates: Muawiya b. Abi Sufyan wanted to construct a water canal near Medina. The route of this canal intersected with the area where the Uhud martyrs were buried. Muawiya sent people to excavate the martyrs' bones. During the excavation, the bodies of the martyrs were found intact, complete, and fresh even after 46 years; when a shovel struck a shoulder blade, blood flowed. Jabir noted that he recognized part of his father's foot. The martyrs were then buried more deeply in their new graves. This narration holds an important place in Islamic tradition as strong evidence that the bodies of the martyrs were preserved without decay. The current location of the Uhud martyrdom corresponds to the second burial area where this reburial process took place. A total of 70 Muslim martyrs fell in the Uhud Battle; among these martyrs are Hz. Hamza, Mus'ab b. Umayr, and many other great companions.
