The Hadith of Abu Azze: A Believer is Not Bitten from the Same Hole Twice

Abu Azze al-Jumahi was a prominent poet in Mecca. He was captured while fighting on the side of the polytheists during the Battle of Badr (2 AH/624 CE). Claiming that he was in a difficult economic situation and had to support his daughters, he asked the Prophet Muhammad to release him without ransom. The Prophet released him after taking his word that he would not fight against Muslims again. However, Abu Azze did not keep his promise. After returning to Mecca, he rejoined the propaganda campaign of the Quraysh against Muslims and fought again on the side of the polytheists during the Battle of Uhud (3 AH/625 CE). After Uhud, he was captured again and this time asked to be released once more. The Prophet acted differently this time: "A believer cannot be bitten from the same hole twice," he said and ordered his execution. Abu Azze could not escape this punishment. This event illustrates both the importance Islam places on contracts and the foresight and unwavering nature required of a believer's identity. The hadith 'A believer is not bitten from the same hole twice' has become an important expression of Islamic wisdom that is still frequently cited and practiced today.
