The expedition of Abu Afek by Hz. Salim b. Umeyr (2nd year of Hijra after Badr)

Abu Afek was a hypocrite who was said to be one hundred and twenty years old in Medina and wrote poems inciting the people against the Prophet and Islam. After the Battle of Badr, during the period when the Prophet consolidated his authority in Medina, Abu Afek continued to write poems belittling this victory and calling Muslims to separate. Hz. Salim b. Umeyr al-Ansari killed Abu Afek while he was sleeping at night in the month of Shawwal of the 2nd year of Hijra (April 624). According to reports, the incident took place outside Medina, in the territory of Banu Amr b. Awf. Historians evaluating this event emphasize that Abu Afek was not only writing poetry but was also actively engaged in inciting the new Islamic community in Medina to collapse from within. Considering that Medina was under pressure both externally (the threat of Quraysh) and internally (hypocrites) during this period, the strategic context of such operations becomes clearer.
