History

These narrations conveyed by Hz. Aisha (r.anha) reveal the material aspect of the daily life of the Prophet Muhammad in Medina. Hz. Aisha said: "From the time he arrived in Medina until his death, Muhammad's family did not fill their stomachs with wheat bread for three consecutive days." In another narration, it was reported: "Muhammad's family members did not eat two meals in one day. What they ate was either dates or water." When these explanations are read carefully, the following picture emerges: The Prophet Muhammad lived this life not out of scarcity, but by conscious choice. It is known that many of his companions had financial means, while some of his wives desired a more comfortable life. Indeed, Allah Almighty offered them the option to choose either worldly life or Allah and His Messenger; it is narrated in the Qur'an that they all chose Allah and His Messenger (Ahzâb 33/28-29). The lifestyle of the Prophet Muhammad represents the pinnacle of the understanding of asceticism in Islam. Choosing a humble life despite the opportunities for power, authority, and wealth was an inseparable part of his prophetic character. While narrating these events, Hz. Aisha does not convey any complaint or rebellion; on the contrary, she conveys them with a deep sense of respect and admiration.
