Sayyid Hashim b. Abdimenaf's grave, the great grandfather of our Prophet

Hashim b. Abdimenaf b. Qusayy b. Kilab al-Qurashi (d. c. 524 AD) is the great grandfather of the Prophet. His real name is Amr; during the years of famine in Mecca, he earned the nickname "Hashim" (breaker, cutter) for breaking the bread and wheat he brought from Syria into pieces to feed the people. Hashim was the head of one of the most respected families of the Quraysh. He made trade agreements with the Byzantine Empire and Yemen on behalf of the people of Mecca. These agreements laid the groundwork for the Quraysh to conduct their winter and summer caravans freely; he is considered the founder of this seasonal trade tradition mentioned in the Qur'an (Quraysh 106/1-2). During his commercial activities, Hashim married Selma bint Amr from the Khazraj tribe in Medina. From this marriage, Shaybah was born. Shaybah would later be known as Abdul Muttalib and would become the grandfather of the Prophet. Hashim passed away during a trade journey to Gaza (present-day Palestine) and was buried there. Therefore, this location in Medina is characterized as a place associated with his descendants and lineage, even though Hashim himself is not buried here.
