Reisiye Minaret

The minarets of the Prophet's Mosque were built in different periods and have been referred to by various names. The Reisiye Minaret marks a special position among the main minarets of the mosque. The first minaret of the Prophet's Mosque was built during the reign of Walid ibn Abd al-Malik between 706-709 AD; before that, Hz. Bilal would call the adhan by climbing a high pole or tree. In later periods, various minarets were added and named. The minarets built during the Mamluk period were renovated during the Ottoman period; in addition to minarets named after sultans like Sultan Abdulmecid and Kanuni, different names like Reisiye were also used.
