Muhallak Column

The Muhallak Column is one of the columns that houses the most profound memories of the Prophet's Mosque. It is located on the right side adjacent to the qibla. During the time of the Prophet, there was no pulpit in the mosque. The Prophet Muhammad, who delivered Friday sermons leaning on a palm trunk, found that this trunk was no longer sufficient as the number of Muslims increased. He had a three-step pulpit made for a companion; he began to deliver his sermons from this pulpit. Once he transitioned to the pulpit, the palm trunk he had leaned on for years began to moan; this miraculous sound was named 'Hannâne' (the moaning one). The sound ceased when the Prophet embraced the trunk. The name 'Muhallaka' originates from the tradition of adorning this column or its surroundings with a fragrant substance called 'halûk'. During the time of Hajjâc b. Yûsuf es-Sekafî, a special mushaf sent to him was preserved in a chest next to this column; therefore, it was also referred to as the 'Mushaf Column'.
