Hz. Sabit b. Dahdah (Ebu Dahdah)

Sâbit b. Dahdah was from the Ansar and belonged to the Khazraj tribe in Medina. Some sources also mention his name as Ebü'd-Dahdâha b. Dahdâha. Despite living under the protection of the Ansar, it is reported that he was not adequately embraced by the community. The Prophet was looking for someone among the companions to take care of a date palm garden belonging to an orphan child. He asked, "Who will take this garden and give it to its owner; in return, there will be a date palm garden for him in Paradise?" Sâbit b. Dahdah volunteered. He went to the owner of the garden and said, "I am buying your garden at its value; in return, there will be a tree for you in Paradise from the Prophet." When the Prophet heard of this sacrifice, he said in admiration: "Is there anyone who asks how many palms are in the gardens of Paradise? Ebû Dahdah has given his garden in Medina!" Sâbit b. Dahdah was martyred in the Battle of Uhud (3 AH/625 AD). When the Prophet received the news of his martyrdom, he was deeply moved and said: "There are many clusters of date palms that have been spread for Ebû Dahdah in Paradise."
