MapHistory
Abdullah b. Zeyd b. Sa'lebe el-Ensârî (d. 32/653) belongs to the Khazraj branch of the Ansar. It is also mentioned in sources that his actual grandfather's name is not Sa'lebe but Abdürabbih. He pledged allegiance to the Prophet at the Second Aqabah and participated in many battles, especially the battles of Badr, Uhud, and the Trench. In the first year of Hijra, after the completion of the Prophet's Mosque, the issue of how Muslims would be called to prayer came to the agenda. The Prophet consulted with his companions; various suggestions such as ringing a bell, blowing a horn, and lighting a fire were put forward; however, none of these were adopted due to their reminders of Jewish and Christian practices or other concerns. That night, Abdullah b. Zeyd saw someone in a green robe in his dream. This person taught him the phrases of the call to prayer one by one: "Allahu ekber, Allahu ekber / Eşhedü en lâ ilâhe illallah / Eşhedü enne Muhammeden Resûlullah / Hayye ale's-salâh / Hayye ale'l-felâh / Allahu ekber, Allahu ekber / Lâ ilâhe illallah." In the morning, he rushed to the Prophet and told his dream. After listening, the Messenger of Allah said, "This is a true dream" and ordered Bilâl to teach these words. Because Bilâl's voice was louder and more beautiful. Bilâl went up to the roof of a tall house belonging to a woman from the Neccar family and recited the first call to prayer in history. At that time, Hz. Ömer also came out of his house and reported that he had seen the same dream, but Abdullah acted before him. Thus, the call to prayer was legitimized in the 1st or 2nd year of Hijra. After this event, Abdullah b. Zeyd began to be referred to as "Sâhibü'l-ezân." [Source: İsmail Lütfi Çakan, "Abdullah b. Importance and Narrations
Abdullah b. Zeyd (r.a.) narrated his dream. The Prophet (s.a.s.): "This is a true dream; go teach Bilâl, he has a louder voice than you" said. Upon this, Bilâl recited the call to prayer. Hz. Ömer also went up to the house and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I also saw the same dream; but he acted before me."
