Hashmi Zib (Wolf's Nose) Late Period Ottoman Fortress in Medina

The Hashmi Zib Fortress is located in a protruding area known as "Wolf's Nose" on the slopes of Mount Uhud, north of Medina. It was constructed in H. 1274 (A.D. 1857) by the then Governor of Medina, Khalid Efendi (Khalid Pasha). The fortress was strategically placed as a defense point against potential attacks from the north of Medina and to control the Uhud region. During World War I (1914-1918), the Ottoman Medina garrison under the command of Fahreddin Pasha established a defensive line that included this fortress. Despite the Arab Revolt (1916) and pressure from British-supported forces, Medina remained under Ottoman control. Although the fortress has largely fallen into ruin today, some remnants of its stone walls still stand. It is one of the rare examples of late Ottoman defensive architecture in the Hejaz.
