History

The doors of the Prophet's Mosque have been systematically numbered during the modern expansion periods. Each gate takes its name from either a historical companion, a caliph, or a Saudi ruler. The King Saud Gate is named after King Saud bin Abdulaziz, the second king of Saudi Arabia (1953-1964). The first major Saudi expansion of the Prophet's Mosque was carried out during King Saud's reign.
