MapHistory
The doors of the Prophet's Mosque have been systematically numbered during modern expansion periods. Each door is named after either a historical companion, a caliph, or a Saudi ruler. The Hijrah Gate is named in reference to the historic migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. This migration in 622 AD is a turning point in Islamic history.
