MapHistory
The gates of the Prophet's Mosque have been systematically numbered during the modern expansion periods. Each gate takes its name from either a historical companion, a caliph, or a Saudi ruler. The King Abdulaziz Gate is named after King Abdulaziz bin Saud (1932-1953), the founder of modern Saudi Arabia.
