History

The gates of the Prophet's Mosque have been systematically numbered during the modern expansion periods. Each gate takes its name from either a historical companion, a caliph, or a Saudi ruler. The Hz. Ali b. Abi Talib Gate carries the name of Hz. Ali, the fourth caliph of Islam and the son-in-law of the Prophet.
