MapHistory
The gates of the Prophet's Mosque have been systematically numbered during the modern expansion periods. Each gate takes its name from either a historical companion, a caliph, or a Saudi ruler. The King Fahd Gate is named after the fifth King of Saudi Arabia, King Fahd b. Abdulaziz (1982-2005). During King Fahd's reign, the Prophet's Mosque underwent its largest expansion.
