MapHistory
The gates of the Prophet's Mosque have been systematically numbered during modern expansion periods. Each gate takes its name from either a historical companion, a caliph, or a Saudi ruler. The Gate of Hz. Omar b. Al-Khattab bears the name of the second caliph of Islam, 'Al-Farooq' Hz. Omar. Hz. Omar is the caliph who first comprehensively expanded the Prophet's Mosque.
