History

The gates of the Prophet's Mosque have been systematically numbered during the modern expansion periods. Each gate takes its name from either a historical companion, a caliph, or a Saudi ruler. The Umar ibn al-Khattab Gate bears the name of the second caliph of Islam, 'Al-Farooq' Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar was the caliph who first comprehensively expanded the Prophet's Mosque.
