Gabriel Gate No. 40 and Abdulmecid Khan's Tugra

Gabriel Gate (Bab al-Jibril) is one of the doors of the Prophet's Mosque and has been associated throughout history with the direction from which Gabriel came to the Prophet Muhammad. Some narrations mention that the gate on the side close to the Prophet's chamber is referred to by this name. The 4th verse of Surah Al-Tahrim is inscribed above the gate: "If both of you repent to Allah, your hearts will have been rightly guided. But if you support one another against the Messenger, know that his protector is Allah; and Gabriel, and the righteous believers, and the angels are his supporters." The Tugra of Sultan Abdulmecid Khan (1839-1861) above the gate belongs to the sultan who carried out the most comprehensive renovation works of the Prophet's Mosque during the Ottoman period. Sultan Abdulmecid completely rebuilt the Prophet's Mosque between 1265-1277 AH (1849-1861 AD); the gate and minarets were shaped during this period.
