El-Muhtatibu Ottoman Hijaz Railway Station

The Hijaz Railway is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Islamic world. Sultan Abdulhamid II initiated this railway line extending from Damascus to Medina in 1900 and completed it in 1908. The total length of the line is approximately 1,464 km. Initially, it was planned to extend to Mecca; however, this goal could not be achieved. The financing of the project was covered by donations collected from the entire Muslim world and from the Ottoman state treasury. In this context, the project is not only a transportation investment but also a strong symbol of Islamic solidarity and the Ottoman caliphate. Before the construction of the railway, the pilgrimage journey between Medina and Damascus took more than forty days by camel caravans. Thanks to the railway, this duration was reduced to a few days; the dangers, fatigue, and financial burden faced by the pilgrims were significantly alleviated. During World War I, Arab rebels led by Lawrence of Arabia (T.E. Lawrence) repeatedly sabotaged the Hijaz Railway line and its stations. After the war, with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the line remained largely out of use. Today, many stations, bridges, and tunnels along the route have turned into ruins or are partially preserved. This station represents one of the important stops on the historical line close to Medina or along the Medina-Damascus route.
