Departure for a Jewish Funeral

A funeral procession was passing by where the Prophet Muhammad was located. According to reports, the Messenger of Allah stood up as a sign of respect. His companions around him were surprised and said, 'O Messenger of Allah! That is a Jewish funeral!' Upon this, the Prophet Muhammad said: 'Is it not also a human life?' or according to another narration, he said, 'Show respect in the face of death.' The historical significance of this event can be evaluated from several perspectives. Firstly, the Prophet Muhammad's approach to human values transcended religious divisions. The death of every person, whether Muslim or not, is a serious event and deserves respect. Secondly, there has been a dispute in Islamic jurisprudence regarding the issue of standing for funerals; some scholars have argued that it is recommended to stand when a funeral passes based on this narration. Although there are multiple versions of this event in the sources, the essence of the message is common: the Prophet Muhammad approached even Jewish or polytheist funerals with respect, emphasizing that the phenomenon of death unites humanity at a common point.
