Buda'a Well (One of the Wells from the Time of Our Prophet)

Buda'a Well (بئر بضاعة) is one of the historical wells that existed in Medina during the time of the Prophet Muhammad and was used by the Ansar. This well has become synonymous with an important hadith regarding the purity of water in Islamic jurisprudence. According to the narration of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, the Prophet was asked about the Buda'a Well. People were curious whether the water was pure since various dirty substances were thrown into the well. The Prophet said: "Water is a purifier; nothing can make it impure." (Tirmidhi, Taharat 49; Abu Dawood, Taharat 33) This hadith has become an important evidence addressing the issue of "little water/much water" in Islamic jurisprudence literature. In the Hanafi school, the principle that water is considered pure as long as its color, smell, and taste do not change, even if impure substances mix with it, is also supported by this hadith. Today, Buda'a Well is among the historical wells that can still be visited in Medina.
