BabusSelam Gate and Sultan Abdulmecid's Tughra

Bâbüsselâm is one of the historical gates of the Prophet's Mosque. It is reported that there was a gate with this name or in this location during the time of the Prophet Muhammad; over time, the name was carried into the gate arrangements of the Ottoman period. Sultan Abdulmecid Han (1839-1861) is the sultan who made the greatest contribution to the Prophet's Mosque. During the extensive renovation carried out between 1849-1861, the mosque was completely renewed and rebuilt in the understanding of neo-Umayyad architecture. During this period, all the gates, minarets, and interior arrangements were renewed. The tughra of Abdulmecid Han on the gate is the seal and signature of the sultan in the Ottoman tradition; it documents that the gate was built or restored during the Sultan's reign. This tughra also symbolizes the Ottoman State's title as the protector and guardian of the Two Holy Sanctuaries.
