Abu Huraira (r) and Milk

Abu Huraira (d. 58/678) is the companion who narrated the most hadith from the Prophet Muhammad; he lived a life of asceticism throughout his life. He was one of the most important representatives of the People of Suffa; Suffa was the special area for poor and homeless Muslims who resided in the courtyard adjacent to the Prophet's Mosque. According to the narration mentioned, Abu Huraira was extremely hungry and exhausted. To describe the severity of his hunger, he said: "I would throw myself to the ground to fill my stomach; I would step on a stone and fall to the ground so that people would think I was crazy, while inside I was about to faint." During those days, the Prophet Muhammad had sent him a bowl of milk or an event related to the milk shared in Suffa had occurred. There are many narrations in various sources stating that every food and drink touched by the Prophet's blessed hand was sufficient for many even when it was little. In the accounts related to Abu Huraira, miraculous scenes are also narrated where the little became much after the Prophet's prayer. This event reflects the daily life of the People of Suffa, the material difficulties in the early years of Medina, and the compassion of the Prophet Muhammad towards his companions. It also explains why Abu Huraira never left the side of the Prophet Muhammad for even a moment: Because he was hungry, he had no treasure; but he was willing to risk everything for knowledge.
