Uhud Cave Mihras Fissure (شق المهراس)‎

After the evacuation of the Archers' Hill during the Battle of Uhud, the polytheist cavalry forces under the command of Khalid ibn al-Walid surrounded the Muslims from behind. The Muslim ranks were dispersed; the Prophet Muhammad tried to distance himself from the enemy ranks with a few loyal companions. In these critical moments, the Prophet Muhammad was severely wounded. Utbah ibn Abi Waqqas from the Quraysh broke the Prophet's lower right jaw with a stone he threw. In another attack, a blow to his face caused two rings of armor to embed in his cheek; Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah broke his own teeth while removing these rings with his teeth. Some narrations state that the Prophet Muhammad fell into a pit or fissure in the rock called "Mihrâs." Mihrâs means a stone mortar used for grinding or crushing, and the name given to this geographical feature in Uhud comes from here. Ali passed through the enemies to bring water to the Prophet; however, the water was spoiled. The Prophet used this water not to drink but to wash his blood. Fatimah bandaged her father's wound; when the bleeding could not be stopped, a burning mat was brought, and its ashes were used to dress the wound. Even in these severe moments, the Prophet prayed: "O Allah! Forgive my people, for they do not know." Today, this site on the slope of Uhud Mountain is among the sacred places visited by pilgrims.
