Imam Bukhari Mosque

Imam Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (810-870) is the author of the work al-Jami' al-Sahih (Sahih al-Bukhari), which is considered the pinnacle of Islamic hadith science. Born in Bukhara (present-day Uzbekistan), Imam Bukhari included 7,275 hadiths in this work, which is regarded as the most reliable book after the Quran. Imam Bukhari has a deep connection with Medina: he came to Medina multiple times for hadith studies and took lessons from many teachers in the Prophet's Mosque. Many sections of Sahih al-Bukhari were written in Medina; therefore, his spiritual connection with Medina is extremely strong. The Bukhara neighborhood in Medina has historically been the settlement area for Muslims who came to Medina from Central Asia — especially from Bukhara, Samarkand, and surrounding cities — for knowledge or for the purpose of migration. This community contributed to Medina while preserving their cultural identity, naming the mosques they built after the great scholars they were connected to. The Imam Bukhari Mosque has been largely preserved during the reconstruction process of the Saudi era; it is noted that it was excluded from the scope of demolition.
