MapHistory
The Prophet Muhammad set out for Medina after staying in Kuba for four to fourteen days during his migration journey. In the month of Rabi' al-Awwal in the year 1 AH / 622 CE, on a Friday, the Prophet Muhammad left Kuba heading towards Medina, and when he arrived at the Ranuna Valley, which belongs to the tribe of Salim b. Awf (Banu Salim), the time for the noon and Friday prayers had entered. The Prophet stopped his camel here and led the first Friday prayer in the history of Islam with a congregation of about one hundred people. Before this prayer, the Prophet delivered two consecutive sermons. In his first sermon, after praising and thanking Allah, he said: "O people! Prepare provisions for the Hereafter before you die. Know that Allah has made Friday prayer obligatory upon you until the Day of Judgment on this day, in this month, and in this place." This sermon holds great significance as the first Friday sermon in the history of Islam. To commemorate this historical event, a mosque was built at this location in later periods. The mosque is referred to in various historical sources as "Masjid al-Jumu'ah", "Masjid al-Wadi Ranuna", "Banu Salim Mosque", and "Atika Mosque". The mosque is one of the important historical stops along the migration route from Kuba Mosque → Friday Mosque → Prophet's Mosque. Additionally, there are place names known as "Kubeyb" and "Sulb Valley" in the region, which are mentioned in older sources; these locations describe the geographical points surrounding the Friday Mosque. The mosque was modernized in the 1990s.
