Hz. Omar Hendek Mosque

Hz. Omar b. al-Khattab (d. 23/644) is the second caliph of Islam and one of the closest companions of the Prophet Muhammad. During the Battle of the Trench (H. 5/M. 627), Hz. Omar, like other companions, stood guard at the trench and meticulously observed the prayer times throughout the battle. The mosque is one of the historical mosques in the Yedi Mescidler complex. It is known to have been built in the Ayyubid period in H. 575 (M. 1179) or H. 577 (M. 1181) and restored in H. 876 (M. 1471-72) during the reign of the Mamluk Sultan Qaytbay. It has also undergone various repairs during the Ottoman period. Hz. Omar was martyred in H. 23 / M. 644 when he was stabbed by a Magian while leading prayers in the Prophet's Mosque during his caliphate. This mosque, which preserves the prayer place of Hz. Omar during the Battle of the Trench, sheds light on that critical period of Islamic history.
