Hz. Ali Hendek Mosque, where Hz. Ali's tent was during the Battle of the Trench

Hz. Ali b. Abu Talib is the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. At the age of 26 during the Battle of the Trench (H. 5/M. 627), Hz. Ali displayed great heroism in the most critical moments of the battle. One of the most critical events of the Battle of the Trench was the attempt of the Quraysh warrior Amr b. Abdüvedd to cross the trench. Amr described himself as a warrior equal to a thousand cavalry and challenged the Muslims. The Prophet Muhammad said, "This man will defeat you all," while Hz. Ali stepped forward and volunteered to fight him one-on-one. The Prophet initially did not want to allow it; however, when Hz. Ali insisted, he permitted him. Hz. Ali killed Amr b. Abdüvedd; this victory affected the course of the battle and forced the pagan cavalry to retreat. The Prophet Muhammad said about this heroism: "Ali's blow on the day of the Trench is more virtuous than the worship of the entire Ummah until the Day of Judgment." It is known that the Hz. Ali Mosque was built or renovated during the Ayyubid period in H. 577 (M. 1181) and restored during the reign of Mamluk Sultan Qaytbay in H. 876 (M. 1471-72). It also underwent repairs in H. 902 (M. 1497) and during the reign of Sultan Abdulmecid in H. 1268 (M. 1851-52).
