Gamame Mosque

Gamame Mosque is located to the west of the Prophet's Mosque, near the old market area of Medina. It is recognized as the prayer area where the Prophet Muhammad led Eid prayers outside the Prophet's Mosque in Medina. As for the history of the prayer area: The Prophet Muhammad would usually lead Eid prayers in an open area outside the mosque in Medina. Over time, this area came to be known as "musallâ". Caliph Umar and subsequent caliphs continued this tradition. The mosque's name "Gamâme" (cloud) is based on the following narration: During a drought, the Prophet Muhammad led the istiskā prayer in this place and prayed for rain. After his prayer, the sky became cloudy and it rained. Because of this miraculous event, the mosque was named "Gamâme" (cloud). Some narrations also mention that during the Prophet's Farewell Pilgrimage, a cloud appeared while he was delivering a sermon and leading prayers in this place. In sources, the mosque is counted among the places where Eid prayers were held, along with the mosques of Abu Bakr, Umar, and Ali. According to Adnan Şensoy's notes, Gamame Mosque symbolizes the place where the Prophet Muhammad led Eid prayers. During the Ottoman period, the mosque was extensively renovated. The current structure carries the Ottoman influence with its several domes and stone walls.
