Beni Züreyk Mosque (The place where the Qur'an was first recited in Medina)

Rafi' b. Malik al-Hazraji is a prominent companion from the Ansar who participated in the Second Aqabah Pledge (before H. 1/M. 622). When he met the Prophet at Aqabah, the Prophet gave him the verses that had been revealed up to that day; Rafi' specifically learned Surah Yusuf from the Prophet. Upon returning to Medina, Rafi' gathered his family, tribe, and neighbors and recited Surah Yusuf. This recitation is recorded in history as the first time the Qur'an was recited aloud in front of a congregation in Medina. This historic recitation took place in this mosque in the Beni Züreyk neighborhood. Beni Züreyk is one of the branches of the Hazraj tribe in Medina.
